The chorus opens with these words, written by Beethoven, in an appeal to optimism and joy:
O Freunde, nicht diese tone!
Sondern lasst uns angenehmere anstimmen,
und freudevollerre
Freude! Freude!
Oh friends, not these tones!
Let us sing more cheerful songs,
And more joyful.
Joy! Joy!
