It is the Eve of Christmas. Tomorrow we celebrate the birth of the Savior of the world. Today we continue to ponder the extraordinary, a virgin carrying the Son of God in her womb.
These words have been set to music for a thousand years. This stunning setting was written in 1994 by the American composer, Morten Lauridsen.
Latin text
O magnum mysterium,
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
iacentem in praesepio!
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera
meruerunt potare
Dominum lesum Christum.
Alleluia!
English translation
O great mystery,
and wondrous sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord,
lying in their manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
the Lord Jesus Christ.
