Thirty-six years ago today, Johnny Mercer, Savannah's favorite son and one of the most significant figures in American music history, died in Los Angeles. He was a prolific lyricist and songwriter, a popular singer, and a music industry entrepreneur. For those who enjoy the Great American Songbook and jazz/pop vocals, the Mercer magic remains very much alive in contemporary music.
